  • The Block Island Inshore Fishing Tournament ended on July 27 with record participation and a winning school bluefin tuna measuring 42.5 inches caught by Evan Page of Connecticut. The tournament expanded fishing areas and used a smartphone app—donating all fees plus a matching amount to the Block Island Fire and Rescue Department.  The Newport Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • After a sold-out launch at Fort Adams on Friday, Aug. 1, the Newport Jazz Festival expanded downtown with intimate shows planned for tonight at Jane Pickens Theater at 9:30 p.m. and Saturday at Parlor Bar, with ticket prices from $20 to $58 — these performances offer jazz fans more ways to enjoy the festival’s spirit throughout the weekend — and a relaxed post-festival jam session is set for Sunday.  What's Up Newp

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Community and corporate volunteers gathered Friday at the Sodexo Warehouse in Providence to assemble over 15,000 backpacks loaded with more than 80,000 school supplies for students statewide. The backpacks will be handed out at 12 sites — including Newport's East Bay Community Action Program— during the 26th Annual Backpack distribution set for Saturday, Aug. 23.  WJAR NBC 10

  • The Rhode Island Turnpike & Bridge Authority said it will waive late fees on toll invoices issued from Oct 1, 2024 to Sept 1 if customers pay by the September deadline & asked customers to email their name, address, phone number, invoice number, license plate and E-ZPass account details to resolve their issues more quickly.  What's Up Newp
