CULTURE NEWS

  • The 71st Newport Jazz Festival wrapped up Sunday evening at Fort Adams State Park under perfect weather after three days of sold-out performances that showcased both high-energy and traditional jazz. Friday’s event featured a summer camp in partnership with Salve Regina University that introduced high school students to jazz theory and performance—adding a unique educational angle to the festival.  What's Up Newp
  • Newport Navy Chorus is seeking singers of all voice ranges for its 2025-2026 season with benefit concerts for nonprofits in December and May and community performances at nursing homes and ceremonies such as singing the National Anthem and Navy Hymn. Rehearsals will be held Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in room 100 of Perry Hall on the Navy Base—registration will cost $25 for the first three sessions on September 2, 9, and 16 and no auditions or music reading skills are required; call chairperson Jerry Culver at 401/345-2499 or music director Lori McDowell at 401/862-3334 for more details.  Newport This Week

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Dan McKee signed a law that will raise the minimum wage from $15 to $17 over the next two years—after the bill passed in June. The increase follows the last raise that took effect this January.  ABC6

HEALTH NEWS

  • Newport Hospital lactation counselor Rebecca Hurd explained that newborns feed 8 to 12 times a day and a proper latch is essential to avoid pain in early breastfeeding. She urged parents to use skin-to-skin contact and join the free Breastfeeding Support Group every Thursday—actions that help guide the critical first week.  The Newport Daily News

  • A new local drink called The Fluffanutter, made with peanut butter syrup and marshmallow fluff, has been popular since last spring at the Coffee Cubby in Manville.
