  • Touro Synagogue will hold its annual Washington Letter Reading at Old Colony House on Sunday, Aug. 17 at 1 p.m. The event was moved after Newport’s Jeshuat Israel was evicted from its 140-year home following a legal battle + keynote speaker Crystal Williams will address the nation’s legacy of religious freedom.  The Newport Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Newport City Council voted 5-2 to pursue a resolution for regional school consolidation with Middletown that aims to save $4 million annually and boost state reimbursements for school projects. City staff will arrange a joint meeting with Middletown officials and RIDE—pending new legislation from the General Assembly—to prepare the ballot question.  What's Up Newp
  • New Rogers High School will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 22 at 10 a.m.—a full-circle event that brings together graduates from 1958 and the upcoming class of 2026 to mark the school's official opening. The ceremony will feature a flag-raising, brief speeches and public tours with complimentary refreshments while construction work continues on site.  Newport This Week

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mount Hope Bridge closed for a four-day resurfacing project that began Thursday at 7 p.m.—it remains closed until 5 a.m. Monday while crews mill the road and detour transit routes are in effect. The work stops emergency vehicles from crossing and will improve the bridge’s ride.  What's Up Newp
  • At its Wednesday night meeting, the Newport City Council honored retired library director Joe Logue by proclaiming August 14 as 'Joe Logue Day'—awarding him for eight years of leadership that guided the library through COVID-19 challenges and key renovations. Logue, who started his library career after decades in other fields, thanked the council and staff for their support.  What's Up Newp
