  • Today, the 33-year-old yacht Tree of Life offers luxury charters from Newport Harbor under Capt. Josh Jacques and his wife, with trips that include two-hour sails, sunset cruises, overnight trips and longer voyages to places like Maine and New York City. It sails from May through October and may soon expand from six to 12 guests — pending approval — while also hosting wedding ceremonies on board.  What's Up Newp

CRIME NEWS

  • Special Assistant Attorney General Devon Flanagan was arrested on Thursday for trespassing at 24 Bannister’s Wharf in Newport—police said patrons refused to leave, and a district court summons was issued as the Attorney General’s Office began its review.  WJAR NBC 10

  • Newport artists Susan M. Matthews and Claudia Flynn are featured in the Growing the NetWorks exhibition at the WaterFire Arts Center in Providence, where work from over 60 Rhode Island creatives is on display until Aug. 31—honoring the vision of the late Dr. Joseph A. Chazan.  What's Up Newp

  • Mount Hope Bridge, a 96-year-old structure, is closed for repaving work that began yesterday and will stay closed through the weekend — detours are in place for drivers and the bridge will reopen Monday morning at 5:00 a.m. — New pavement is expected to hold for five years.  WJAR NBC 10
  • NBC 10's Christina Erne asked why dirt roads to East Beach and Charlestown Breachway have deep potholes—RIDEM said CRMC rules stop paving and that gravel sections are graded periodically.  WJAR NBC 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Three Newport beaches are closed to swimmers due to high bacteria levels—Easton’s Beach was closed Friday while First Beach and Gooseberry Beach were shut down Thursday. State health officials will continue to monitor water quality through Labor Day weekend.  What's Up Newp
