  • Newport Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 1 will celebrate its 125th anniversary in September with public events including a cocktail party at the Sailing Museum on Sept. 12, a free event with step dancers and a lecture on Sept. 13, and a Mass with a pinning ceremony on Sept. 14 — all events highlight Irish heritage and support for local charities. The 240-member sisterhood raises funds through donations, drives, and scholarships for community programs.  What's Up Newp
  • Newport organizers announced that the Sail for Hope regatta will take place on Sept. 27 near Jamestown and benefit Warrior Sailing, Better Bay Alliance, and Sail Newport—groups that support veterans, boating safety, and community sailing programs.  What's Up Newp

CRIME NEWS

  • Devon Flanagan, a special assistant attorney general, was arrested last week in Newport for trespassing at 24 Bannister's Wharf—bodycam video shows her defiant remarks and the arrest of Veronica Hannan for willful trespass, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.  WJAR NBC 10
  • Newport police arrested Special Assistant Attorney General Devon Flanagan outside a restaurant on Thursday night for alleged trespassing — Attorney General Neronha's office is reviewing the incident and expects to conclude the review in a few days.  ABC6

CULTURE NEWS

  • Award-winning violinist Lun Li will perform 'A Long Walk Through the Night' at Belmont Chapel on Sunday, Sept. 7 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. + He will play using both baroque and modern violins while the event launches Puddingstone Music’s new concert series with complementary paintings by Alastair Dacey.  What's Up Newp
  • This past weekend, Newport hosted the Weekend of Coaching with 14 historic 19th-century horse-drawn coaches traveling along Bellevue Ave, Ocean Drive and by mansions like The Elms and Marble House, stopping at sites including Chateau sur-Mer and Second Beach. Organized by the Coaching Club of New York, the event revived the historic tradition of four-in-hand driving & ended with private dinners at Rosecliff.  What's Up Newp

  • Salve Regina University announced Monday that it had chosen Dr. Aaron Lorenz as the new vice provost of graduate and professional studies; he will lead the graduate programs, report to Dr. Nancy Schreiber, and replace Dr. David Altounian. Lorenz brings over 30 years of higher education experience from roles such as dean at Ramapo College — experience that will help strengthen the university’s graduate offerings.  What's Up Newp

  • The 20th Ida Lewis Distance Race started Friday morning from Newport Harbor in 12—15 knot winds with 35 teams racing on courses from 104 to 150 nautical miles, and some competitors extended their race up to 27 hours as 10 boats retired. Beau Van Metre’s S&S 60 Running Tide finished first in just under 22½ hours while Tommy Henshaw’s Hobie 33 Captain Sluggo crossed the finish line after more than 23 hours—youth and collegiate teams also joined this offshore challenge.  What's Up Newp
