CRIME NEWS

  • Devon Flanagan, a Rhode Island special assistant attorney general, was arrested on Aug. 14 in Newport for trespassing outside a restaurant and is under review after body camera footage showed her warning officers 'you're gonna regret this'—she kept saying she was an AG.  What's Up Newp
  • Devon Hogan Flanagan, an assistant attorney general, was arrested on August 14 outside Clarke Cooke House restaurant in Newport for trespassing after telling police — 'You're gonna regret this' while asking them to turn off body cameras, and the Attorney General's office is reviewing her conduct and considering disciplinary actions including suspension without pay.  The Newport Daily News

  • Newport Sings is launching free fall choral programs for teens and adults on Aquidneck Island starting the week of Sept. 15—participants can join Aquidneck Singers, Quorus, or Luminous Voices without auditions as they prepare for a winter concert on Dec. 13.  What's Up Newp

  • Salve Regina University has named Dr. Aaron Lorenz vice provost of graduate and professional studies—he will lead plans to expand the university's graduate programs and take over from Dr. David Altounian, who continued teaching in the spring semester.  Newport This Week

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council report shows state spending is growing by 10.9% over three years while revenue grows only 6.4%—Medicaid spending rose $377.9 million and education costs increased, forcing the state to rely on one-time surpluses and federal funds until spending cuts are made.  The Newport Daily News
  • The Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council warned that state spending rose 10.9% in the past two fiscal years while revenue grew only 6.4% and the record $14.3 billion budget has new tax and fee hikes—such as increased gas and conveyance taxes—that raise concerns about long-term sustainability. The report noted that higher investments in education and health services have contributed to a projected $304.3 million deficit for fiscal 2027.  The Public's Radio
  • State regulators asked Newport residents for feedback at a 6 p.m. meeting at Innovate Newport on Wednesday—August 20—to review the benefits and impacts of potentially banning new natural gas connections on Aquidneck Island. The review came as supply issues and an ongoing LNG expansion raised concerns about the island’s future gas reliability.  What's Up Newp

  • Today, the Rhode Island Department of Health recommended closing the swimming area at Spouting Rock Beach Association because high bacteria counts were found at Newport beach— the department will monitor bacteria counts through Labor Day.  ABC6
