CRIME NEWS

  • Devon Flanagan, a Special Assistant Attorney General in the Attorney General’s office, will begin unpaid leave on Monday after an alleged trespassing incident captured on a Newport police officer’s body camera on August 14 outside Clarke Cook House restaurant—she now faces charges of trespassing, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.  ABC6

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Poiesis Quartet will open Newport Classical’s Chamber Series on September 12 by performing Beethoven and new commissions — they have earned national awards at competitions and will engage the community at the Edward King House — at Newport Classical Recital Hall.  The Newport Daily News
  • Today, Governor Dan McKee is heading to Bristol to open the annual Black Ships Festival at Rockwell Park at 10 a.m.—he will honor commodore Matthew Perry, a South Kingstown-born navy officer who sailed to Japan to open trade.  ABC6
  • The Newport International Boat Show will return to downtown Newport from Sept. 11-14 on 17 acres at Newport Yachting Center Marina, presented by BankNewport. The event will feature 350 new sailboats and powerboats—including some making their U.S. debuts—and will offer expanded educational programs, interactive workshops, and a new brokerage basin for boats up to 100 feet.  What's Up Newp

  • Residents, alumni and community leaders celebrated the opening of the new Rogers High School on August 22; the building features modern labs, a teaching kitchen, and a new auditorium — upgrades achieved after years of delays from rising costs and soil issues.  The Newport Daily News
