EDUCATION NEWS

  • Newport Public Schools faces a $1.6 million budget shortfall for the upcoming academic year due to higher special education and out-of-district costs, and Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain said the district will use cost-saving measures to close the gap. The district will begin classes on Sept. 3 at the new Rogers High School with modern features like adjustable lab tables and community meeting spaces—staffing remains full despite a few layoffs.  What's Up Newp

  • Rhode Island Assistant Attorney General Devon Flanagan pleaded no contest on Aug.27 to trespassing after she berated police outside Clarke Cooke House on Aug.14, and she received a six-month filing with six months unpaid leave — she is banned from returning to the restaurant.  The Newport Daily News
  • Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha said after a Newport rally on August 26 that he and Connecticut’s AG plan to file suit against the federal government—challenging the Aug 22 stop-work order on the near-complete, 65-turbine Revolution Wind project that is key to meeting power contracts.  The Newport Daily News
  • RIPTA will run a Sunday/holiday schedule Monday, Sept 1 in observance of Labor Day—Newport’s Transportation Center will remain open with limited customer service while the ferry shuttle to Providence follows the holiday schedule before moving to a fall timetable on Sept 2.  What's Up Newp
