Good morning, Newport. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 30th of August.

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Newport County Branch of NAACP will host the 58th Annual Black Regiment Monument Commemoration Ceremony at 3 p.m. on Aug. 31 at Patriots Park in Portsmouth—honoring the members who fought in the Battle of Rhode Island. The free event will feature guest speaker Rev. K. Madison Carter and a memorial wreath-laying by local dignitaries.  The Newport Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On August 22, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management stopped work on the Revolution Wind offshore wind farm because of national security concerns—45 turbines have been built so far and about 1,000 jobs are at risk. Local anglers worry that fewer fish protections and warmer waters will hurt fish stocks and their catches.  The Newport Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Newport City Council shot down a proposed impact fee that would have charged special events extra based on attendance to help cover city resource costs. Local organizers including the International Tennis Hall of Fame + Trinity Church said the fee would unfairly burden groups that already support Newport’s economy.  The Newport Daily News
  • Kelly Guerts, sponsor of the new USS Wisconsin, welded her initials into steel during the keel-laying ceremony on August 27 at Electric Boat's facilities in Quonset Point—an event that marks the start of her long-term role in the submarine's life. The large Columbia-class vessel—second in its class—will later join 12 ships that will replace the aging Ohio-class subs.  The Newport Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Aug. 28, the state health department and DEM reported that West Nile Virus risk is high after mosquito samples from Johnston, East Providence and Cranston tested positive. This marks the third time East Providence has seen a positive test this season and officials urge residents to use repellent and eliminate standing water.  The Newport Daily News
  • Aquastar recalled more than 26,000 packages of six-ounce cocktail shrimp sold at Walmart because they may have contained Cesium-137—a dangerous radioactive substance that can increase cancer risk—and were imported from Indonesia between July 31 and August 16; customers can return the product for a full refund.  ABC6
