CULTURE NEWS

  • The Newport Historical Society has partnered with American Ancestors to share its Voices from the NHS Archives database on Black and Indigenous history for millions of genealogy researchers—this project digitized over 5,600 pages and profiled more than 1,800 individuals from the 17th through 19th century. The work continues indefinitely as the society prepares for the opening of Newport’s first Center for Black History on Juneteenth.  What's Up Newp

  • URI marine biologists and students are tracking sharks along our coast as warming water increases their numbers—Dr. Brad Wetherbee and graduate student Joseph Candia explained that sharks mainly eat plankton, fish, squid, and seals—and that humans are not on their menu.  ABC6
  • Portsmouth High School was named among the best schools in Rhode Island and the top school in Newport by U.S. News & World Report — it ranked fourth statewide and 848th nationally with a 96 percent graduation rate — showing strong academic performance.   • Beth Cullen wrote from Gdańsk after touring a massive World War II museum to highlight how division over school budgets and separate administrations has cost students valuable programs—she urged Newport Public Schools to consolidate resources to expand course options and support services.  What's Up Newp

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, ABC6 Chief Stormtracker Kristina Shalhoup hosted Shark Day in North Kingstown—joining University of Rhode Island experts who run educational programs and research conservation techniques that help protect local marine life, including mako sharks.  ABC6
  • Residents in Newport can plan to watch the Orionid meteor shower, which will run from Oct. 2 to Nov. 12 with a peak on Oct. 22 to Oct. 23 and is expected to produce up to 75 meteors per hour as dust from Halley's Comet enters Earth's atmosphere. NASA advises watching after midnight in dark areas — viewers' eyes typically need about 30 minutes to adjust.  The Newport Daily News
