CRIME NEWS

  • In a case unsolved 35 years after Jason Bass’s August 31 murder, his family still seeks justice while police search for Adam Emery; a digital documentary—Mystery Under the Bridge—will premiere Monday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m.  WJAR NBC 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Newport String Project will open its 13th season on Sept. 21 with Pocket Concerts from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at venues including the Newport Art Museum and Belmont Chapel — the intimate concerts feature performances by the Newport String Quartet and guest artists.  What's Up Newp

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students in Newport begin school at the new Rogers High School today. The 167,000—square foot building features open learning spaces and technical training labs, and demolition of the old school will start this fall.  WJAR NBC 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Town councilors in Middletown met on September 2 to discuss restarting talks to merge their school system with Newport’s — a plan approved by a 2022 vote but later narrowly rejected by Newport voters. Councilors will meet with the school board to decide the next steps.  ABC6
  • Today, Newport Police enforce safety in school zones as students return to Rogers High School with a new automated red light camera—and a speed camera that turns on during school hours at the Admiral Kalfbus Road and Hillside Avenue intersection. Officers also conduct patrols and radar checks in five school zones to keep drivers at the 20 mph limit.  WJAR NBC 10
  • Gov. McKee sent a letter to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum after a stop-work order (Aug 22) halted the nearly complete Revolution Wind project that was 80% done. The governor said the order risks blue-collar jobs and may raise energy costs for more than 350,000 homes (in RI and CT).  ABC6
  • Governor McKee sent a letter to Secretary Burgum after the Interior halted work on the Revolution Wind Project on Aug. 22—when the project was 80% complete. He warned that the stop-work order risks hundreds of blue-collar jobs and hinders energy supply for over 350,000 homes.  ABC6

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kennedy's reshuffling of vaccine guidelines has left many in Newport unsure if they can get a COVID-19 shot this season as pharmacies in Rhode Island now offer vaccines only for high-risk individuals and those over 65. Officials say the final rules will be set after ACIP meets on September 18 and 19—insurance coverage may change based on the updated recommendations.  The Newport Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lincoln High School's boys soccer team beat Tiverton 6—0 on Tuesday night in a road game as Mason DiDomenico scored two goals and teammates added to the win with a total of 23 shots on goal. Tiverton's goalie Bodhi Gerlach made five saves but could not stop the Lions' strong play.  What's Up Newp
