COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Jamestown Newport Ferry will offer express service to the Newport International Boat Show from Sept. 11 through Sept. 14 with hourly departures from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. from Jamestown to Perrotti Park & provide a stress-free ride that avoids downtown traffic and parking challenges.  What's Up Newp
  • Newport LAOH is inviting community members to submit photos and memorabilia as it prepares to celebrate its 125th anniversary this September—its 240 members support local charities through events and donations.  Newport This Week
  • Rhode Island Energy is upgrading Newport’s electric system as part of a $128 million plan by installing underground cables and extending feeders in the Long Wharf area to support more electric load. The Amica Newport Marathon is partnering with 11th Hour Racing to use sustainability practices while J.T. Commons is hiring for restaurant roles with walk-in interviews and a career fair on Sept. 6, and the Newport Historical Society released the Voices from the NHS Archives website—sharing documents about people of color in Newport from the 17th to 19th centuries.  The Newport Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • After Labor Day, Newport has many events planned that bring boat shows, food festivals and fun fairs for families—events like a boat show starting Sept 11 and Restaurant Week beginning on Nov 11. Other activities include a wine and food festival at a grand mansion, a motor week and art plus comedy shows that will enliven the fall season.  The Newport Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) is adding free English Language Studies classes at its Newport campus this fall so adult learners can improve their English skills. Classes run on weekday evenings and Saturdays to help people balance work and family commitments.  Newport This Week
  • On Wednesday, RENEWport volunteers joined staff at Claiborne Pell Elementary School to welcome kindergarten through fourth-grade students on the first day of school during the 2025 to 2026 school year. The program will run all year — two Civic Ambassadors from Salve Regina University will help plan upcoming activities.  What's Up Newp

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Aug. 22, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management issued a stop-work order on the Revolution Wind project, which was 80 percent complete and had all necessary permits. Local lawmakers have urged the agency to rescind the order so the project can resume—protecting hundreds of union jobs and local investments.  Newport This Week
  • The Gallagher Wing at the Florence Gray Center in Newport’s North End was transferred from the Rhode Island Department of Education to the local housing authority on Sept. 2 so it can use federal grant funds to renovate the building into a community hub—Rhonda Mitchell said the transfer ensures the property remains off the market for 10 years.  Newport This Week
