  • Newport Chowder Company began in 2019 when Katie Potter used her mother's famous recipe to start selling seafood chowder from a food truck and a downtown store on Thames Street. The business has grown nationwide with a new partnership with Blount Fine Foods—US Foods now carries its chowder for order by businesses coast to coast.  What's Up Newp

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, St. Mary’s Church is hosting two presentations—at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.—to mark the 72nd anniversary of John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier’s wedding from Sept. 12, 1953, using vintage film clips, live organ music and hymns while visitors can tour pew No. 10.  What's Up Newp
  • On September 12, 1953, Jacqueline Bouvier and Senator John F. Kennedy married at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Newport—attended by about 750 to 800 wedding guests with an additional 400 to 450 at the reception held at Hammersmith Farm.  What's Up Newp

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Farmers' Almanac forecasts a cold, snowy winter for New England with significant cold snaps expected in mid-January and mid-February—Newport residents should plan for a mix of rain and snow as the season extends through March and April. Providence generally sees its first measurable snowfall on Dec. 1, hinting at the seasonal shift across the region.  The Newport Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Dan McKee ordered the state health department to direct insurers to cover COVID vaccines for anyone over 6 months and to allow pharmacists to give shots to those 3 years old or older, bypassing the prescription requirement. The order came after FDA approved Fall shots for seniors and people with medical issues + the CDC advisory committee will soon review the policy.  ABC6

  • State health and environmental officials advised residents yesterday to avoid all contact with Lower Melville Pond due to a toxic cyanobacteria bloom that makes the water unsafe for swimming, fishing, boating, and kayaking + warned pet owners to keep their animals away from the water.  What's Up Newp

  • Newport County will host 66 open houses this weekend, especially in Newport and Portsmouth, as sellers plan moves before fall.
