- ➤ Newport County welcomes fall with a busy weekend of free events as summer ends—square dancing, a seed saving workshop, a sea chantey chorus, a gospel concert, an autumn fest and a SUMMA SIZZLA market celebrate local traditions. - ➤ On Wednesday, state leaders will break ground for a new community center at the Davey Lopes Recreation Center—an out-of-school learning center initiative by Gov. Dan McKee who is set to give remarks at the event. WJAR NBC 10
- ➤ New data from the Rhode Island Coalition to End Homelessness shows 2,373 people were counted—a 2.8% decrease from last year—even as unsheltered homelessness rose 15%; the group secured $4M more for shelters and House Minority Leader Michael Chippendale will hold a press conference today at 1 p.m. to address the housing crisis. - ➤ Newport Classical will continue its 2025–2026 Chamber Series this October with two world-class concerts. On Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m., violinist Blake Pouliot and pianist Henry Kramer will perform a Romantic program at the Newport Classical Recital Hall—complimentary wine will be served at intermission—and on Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m., Trio Zimbalist will debut there featuring works by Fu, Smetana and Beethoven. - ➤ A documentary called 'Secret Mall Apartment' tells the story of eight Rhode Island artists who lived in a 750-square-foot apartment in a Providence Place mall parking garage from 2003 to 2007. - ➤ Three Newport County communities received more than $1 million in federal Community Development Block Grants announced by Gov. McKee and the Executive Office of Housing last Wednesday—Jamestown was awarded $500,000 for senior center renovations, Newport received five grants totaling $666,260 for projects like security enhancements and hunger relief, and Middletown secured two grants for public facility improvements. The funding will bolster infrastructure and essential services for local residents. What's Up Newp

- ➤ Newport runners can now register for the inaugural Winter 10K, a 6.2-mile race that will start and finish at Brenton Point State Park on December 7 at 10:00 a.m. A portion of the proceeds will support the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center — early registrants who sign up by September 21 receive a 15% discount. - ➤ High school sports results from Wednesday showed East Greenwich beat Barrington in field hockey and Toll Gate and Cranston teams posted wins in other events—while today's schedule lists field hockey, soccer, tennis and volleyball contests at local venues. The Newport Daily News
