- ➤ The International Yacht Restoration School is holding a raffle for $150 tickets that gives sailing enthusiasts a chance to win a fully restored Beetle Cat sailboat — the draw will occur when 100 tickets are sold or by November 1 to support student boatbuilding training. - ➤ Christian McBride, the acclaimed bassist (nine-time Grammy Award winner), announced his resignation as artistic director of the Newport Jazz Festival on Thursday, ending a tenure that began in 2015 and brought sold-out shows. - ➤ newportFILM will screen the Sundance Audience Award-winning documentary “ANDRÉ IS AN IDIOT” on Thursday, Sept. 25 at the Jane Pickens Theater in Newport—doors will open at 6 p.m. and the film will start at 7 p.m.; the redux screening gives audiences a second chance after an outdoor showing was cut short by a storm in August. - ➤ St. John's church will hold its annual Blessing of the Animals on Oct. 5 after the 10:30 a.m. Mass at 61 Poplar St.—pet owners can bring their pets or photos if they cannot attend with an animal. - ➤ Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Senator Tim Scott have introduced the Quahogs Act to study the decline of quahogs and other native shellfish on the east coast—this bill will create a task force with federal, state and business leaders to find the causes and support Rhode Island’s blue economy. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Rhode Island and Massachusetts joined other Northeast states to form the Northeast Public Health Collaborative that will share details on emergency preparedness, infectious diseases, and vaccine recommendations, according to the Rhode Island Department of Health. State Health Director Dr. Jerry Larkin said the collaboration will support improved public health actions amid changes to federal COVID-19 vaccine guidance — strengthening disease prevention across communities. - ➤ The RIDOH recommended the 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccine for almost all Rhode Islanders 6 months and older to help prevent serious illness from COVID-19 — it is now available in pharmacies and will soon be offered in primary care offices. Parents of children 2 to 18 years should talk to a doctor about the vaccine, and RIDOH helps connect families without a regular healthcare provider to free vaccination sites. What's Up Newp
