COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Newport Elks Lodge members and councilors gathered at City Hall to honor past mayors by reinstalling a 600-pound bronze memorial for late Mayor John Waters, who died three months into office in 1895. The reinstalled monument—lost after the City Hall fire of 1924—now hangs at the main entrance and reflects Waters' role as a founding Lodge member.  Newport This Week
  • IYRS School of Technology and Trades will host the Holly Jolly Weekend in early December, with a free community holiday party on Dec. 5 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Restoration Hall — followed by an artisan market on Dec. 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. featuring local vendors and festive activities.  What's Up Newp
  • The Point Association celebrated Neighborhood Day by dedicating two new Little Share Libraries—one for adults donated in memory of Jim Marinan and one for children sponsored for Parker and James—installed at Battery Park with the City's help. Peter Raposa of the Newport Restoration Foundation built the colonial-style libraries that honor the neighborhood's long history of restoration.  Newport This Week
  • The eighth annual Broadway Street Fair will take place Saturday, Oct. 11 from noon to 6 p.m. along Newport’s Broadway, rain or shine. Over 200 artisans, makers and food vendors will line the route—accompanied by local bands and family activities—with planning meetings set this month and volunteer orientation on Oct. 8.  What's Up Newp

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local chef Cara — Chef Daddy — Mourning announced she will represent Rhode Island on Season 24 of Hell's Kitchen: Battle of the States by competing against 49 chefs after making the announcement from Blu Violet Rooftop in downtown Providence. She overcomes past hardships and carries strong support from local residents as she prepares for the culinary challenge.  WJAR NBC 10
  • Photographer and author Stacy Waldman Bass will discuss her memoir at Charter Books at 8 Broadway in Newport on Monday from 6 to 7 p.m.—she will share her journey through grief following her father's 1995 seaplane crash on Block Island and her mother's death from pancreatic cancer in conversation with local journalist Annie Sherman. Admission is free and organizers request RSVPs.  What's Up Newp
  • Newport’s historic Bowen’s Wharf — the only local setting featured — is set to star in Hallmark Channel’s upcoming holiday film A Newport Christmas, which premieres Sunday, November 2nd at 8/7c and stars Ginna Claire Mason and Wes Brown in a time-travel romance.  What's Up Newp

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Starting next spring, Pell Elementary students will ride on Sail Newport’s 14 new J/7 sailboats after the group invested $500,000 to update its fleet. The older J/22 sailboats are being sold to a sister organization in Maine — which helps fund the upgrade and supports the rental program through October.  Newport This Week

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge in Washington, D.C. ruled on Sept. 22 that work on the 65-turbine Revolution Wind offshore project off Rhode Island will resume as soon as possible—ending a work stoppage that cost $2 million each day and threatened nearly 1,000 local jobs. The decision supports legal efforts to keep power purchase agreements intact while the investigation into national security concerns continues.  Newport This Week
  • On a hot, sunny Saturday, Deputy harbormasters Sam Johnson, Tristan Loughlin and harbormaster Stephen Land patrolled Newport Harbor on the William M, helping boaters and managing about 3,000 vessels during busy summer days. Land, a local resident and ex-cop, led a $1.7 million upgrade of Elm Street Pier—work that shows his commitment to keeping the harbor safe and friendly for all.  Newport This Week
  • Newport Water Division is still classifying its system to identify 2,000 to 3,000 lead service lines while it has about nine years to secure funding and meet a federal mandate. The utility uses GIS mapping, sampling and inspections to verify pipe materials and awaits state reclassification for a low-income zone near the Community College of Rhode Island’s Newport campus—replacement work will begin once funding is approved.  Newport This Week

  • The 2025 Audrain Newport Concours and Motor Week will take place from October 2 to 5, featuring events such as the Concours d’Elegance at The Breakers, a free scenic drive from Second Beach to Bellevue Avenue, a Kids Zone at Fort Adams Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m., and autograph sessions with Jay Leno—major sponsors include A. Lange & Söhne, Cadillac, Bank of America Private Bank, Merrill Lynch, and others.   • The Newport International Polo Series will conclude its 34th season on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Newport Polo—gates open at 12 p.m. for tailgating and fieldside picnics while Trevor Neal sings the national anthem and a grand prize drawing offers round-trip business class travel to any destination.  What's Up Newp
  • Newport is hosting the 2025 Real Tennis World Championship where world No. 1 Camden Riviere defends his title against John Lumley in a best-of-13-sets match played over three days. The tournament is held from Sept. 25 to 27 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame and is broadcast on YouTube — a historic sport that mixes tennis, chess, and pinball.  Newport This Week
