- ➤ Today, a utilities crew mistakenly painted over a finished mural at Maple Avenue and Hillside Avenue, upsetting students and neighbors. City officials apologized and promised clearer written directions and required sign-offs—steps to restore the artwork and complete the mural project along with the planned wildflower garden, bat house and educational signage. - ➤ Jamestown Arts Center will host its free Autumn Arts Open House on Sunday, Oct. 19 from 1 to 4 p.m.—community members can explore studios, meet teaching artists and join art activities like live demonstrations and make-and-take projects. What's Up Newp

- ➤ Newport County will host many fall events this weekend—art shows, a puzzle swap, classic car events, a harvest fair and Oktoberfest celebrations. Residents can join the gallery opening on Oct 4, the library puzzle swap on Oct 4, Car Week from Oct 2 to Oct 5, the harvest fair on Oct 4-5, and Oktoberfest at Newport Craft and Rejects Beer Co. on Oct 4-5. - ➤ Newport’s Common Burying Ground will host an immersive performance called Life After Life next month that uses drama and music to bring the history of 8,000 burials to life. The show will be held four times over Nov. 1-2 with performances at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and free morning tours, with tickets available starting Oct.15—an event that preserves our local heritage. - ➤ The Preservation Society of Newport County will host a two-day symposium on Nov. 6-7 at Rosecliff and Marble House to explore French influences on Newport’s Gilded Age mansions with presentations from international curators including Mathieu Deldicque. - ➤ The Atlantic Shark Institute captured video of a juvenile great white shark off Block Island using a baited remote underwater camera system—this first sighting adds a key data point that helps scientists estimate the shark’s size and age for ongoing research. ABC6

- ➤ Gov. McKee said on Tuesday that Rhode Island is preparing for a government shutdown by focusing on keeping jobs and supporting health services—while Gov. Healey explained that it may delay passport and small business loan processes for residents. WJAR NBC 10
- ➤ On Sept. 30, Newport City Council approved a $7.5 million contract for Reagan Marine Construction to rebuild Perrotti Park’s bulkhead and docks, & awarded $300K to Dubon Masonry Construction to repair a City Hall retaining wall; Councilor Carlin opposed the park project because bond funds were not yet released. The meeting also included a first reading of an ordinance to reclassify city-owned moorings and pulled a resolution on natural gas hookups, with further council votes planned. Newport This Week
- ➤ AG Peter Neronha said the forensic audit of Washington Bridge was delayed a year and a half to avoid influencing jury selection in a lawsuit against bridge contractors+he noted the report found that state program managers, inspectors, and designers should have recognized the bridge's developing problems. He added that when the trial begins, blame may be shared with the Department of Transportation+further affecting the case's outcome. The Newport Daily News

The property, rebuilt from a carriage house into a four-bedroom luxury home with a saltwater pool and panoramic water views, marked the fourth-highest real estate sale this year on Ocean Drive—drawing strong interest from buyers. - ➤ Corcoran Group announced Monday that its first Rhode Island affiliate, Corcoran Chart House Realty, had converted a Barrington firm (expanding luxury real estate services) to serve East Bay and Newport County.
