COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Newport County has a busy week ahead with an introductory handgun safety course at Newport Rifle Club on Oct. 11 and federal grants set to upgrade fire department equipment in several communities, while East Bay Community Action Program promoted two leaders. The MLK Community Center will hold its Annual Meeting and Keeper of the Dream celebration on Oct. 20, and upcoming events include Holiday Help registration on Oct. 14, a Citizen of the Year dinner on Nov. 22, Seed to Soul on Oct. 26, and Arts Around the Fire on Oct. 15 at Sardella’s.  The Newport Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Newport Classical will present four holiday concerts in December with tickets going on sale Oct. 7. The series includes Classical Christmas with Frisson performing at Emmanuel Church on Dec 13 at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and Messiah at the Mansion at Rosecliff on Dec 21 at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.—both programs will feature works by composers such as Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi, Bach and Handel.  What's Up Newp

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Newport Tree Conservancy is calling for volunteers to help plant 100 native trees in Miantonomi Park on Oct. 24-25 from noon to 2 p.m.—an effort to restore the park’s ecosystem by reducing invasive species.  What's Up Newp
  • Wildlife Rehabilitators of Rhode Island are asking for donations after a juvenile bald eagle was found on a highway in Warwick following a likely collision; she received emergency care + gained 2 pounds. They will use a hack box + to feed her without human contact, planning to safely release her once she is strong while raising $2,500 for the retrofit.  WJAR NBC 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The federal government shutdown began October 1 after lawmakers could not agree on funding, causing national parks to close while Social Security, Medicare, and essential services like airports and mail continue to operate. Some nonessential federal workers in Rhode Island are furloughed—services such as passport processing may face delays if the shutdown lasts.  The Newport Daily News
  • House Speaker Shekarchi and Senate President Lawson announced that Oversight Committee hearings will be held today to investigate Gov. McKee’s decision to withhold a forensic audit of the Washington Bridge. The meetings may require state officials to testify under oath as they review the report released Sept. 26 amid ongoing litigation.  ABC6

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Rhode Island law that protects the federal drug discount program went into effect Oct. 1 after a judge denied a pharmaceutical company's injunction request—helping hospitals and community health centers get needed drugs at lower prices. Medical providers depend on the 340B program to reduce costs and support services for patients.  The Newport Daily News

  • Mott & Chace Sotheby’s International Realty announced a $3.9M sale of three historic Compass office buildings at 3 Memorial Boulevard in Newport, 369 South Main Street in Providence, and 19 Narragansett Avenue in Jamestown—Gregory Arakelian represented the buyer Sand Point Companies while John Hodnett represented the sellers. The Newport property, designed around 1879 by George Champlin Mason and a Doris Duke Historic Preservation Award recipient, remains a noted local landmark.  What's Up Newp
