COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Green Valley Country Club was recognized by nonprofit Looking Upwards for its ongoing support for individuals with disabilities. Golf course superintendent Joe Oliveira received the award—acknowledging his strong community spirit and the club's annual Introduction to Golf program with the Newport County YMCA.  Newport This Week

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Newport Chowder Company, a family-owned business known for its award-winning seafood chowder, has signed a national distribution deal with US Foods to supply restaurants, hotels, and universities. The company began small-batch production in 2022 at the Hope and Main food incubator in Warren and now partners with Blount Fine Foods — boosting its national reach.  Newport This Week

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Oct.4, the Church of the Holy Cross on West Main Road will host a noon community lunch and a special service on Oct.5 to lead into its 180-year anniversary celebration on Oct.14. Rev. Carpenter said the small Episcopal church has long served as a cornerstone for Middletowners — preserving its rich history from humble beginnings to its revitalized community efforts during the pandemic.  Newport This Week
  • Rhode Island PBS and The Public's Radio merged into Ocean State Media—approved by the FCC in January and the state attorney general in April—with a new website now live and President Pam Johnston explaining the changes in a recent YouTube video.  WJAR NBC 10

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Newport officials announced that starting November electric rates through the community electricity program will drop 10% compared to last winter — the new pricing will remain fixed through May meter reads and include 5% more locally sourced renewable energy — and residents and businesses will automatically receive the benefit.  What's Up Newp

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Newport Public Education Foundation will honor four individuals for their contributions to public schools at its Evening for Education event on Oct. 23 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Innovate Newport—Ruth Barge Thumbtzen will be named Friend of Education, Team Fame Partner in Education, Bike Newport Unsung Hero, and Sybil Grayko the district Teacher of the Year.  What's Up Newp
  • Rhode Island’s RICAS test scores show little improvement with 33.7% of students reading and writing at grade level and 31.4% proficient in math from more than 58,000 tested. Students not chronically absent scored twice as high—state Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green said the results show measurable progress despite ongoing challenges.  The Newport Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Newport City Council approved a $200,000 grant request on Sept. 29 to secure state funds for the Situation Table program—designed to link fire, housing, and health services for struggling families. The pilot, which started in January, has helped over 40 families and local partners will work together to reduce overlapping efforts.  Newport This Week
  • Newport City Council will meet Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall on Broadway to review license applications, board appointments and action items from City Manager Colin Kennedy, including requests from The Vanderbilt to expand entertainment and a fireworks display application for Castle Hill Inn. The agenda also covers updates on utilities rate studies, ordinance readings on mooring permits and appointments to city commissions.  What's Up Newp
  • City of Newport apologized after a utilities crew mistakenly painted over the mural’s background at Maple Avenue and Hillside Avenue, which disrupted student artwork and weeks of planning. The department said they will use clear written directions and sign-offs in future work—steps that will help restore the mural and complete the project.  Newport This Week

  • Salve Regina students and faculty will launch a mobile wellness unit with a 40-foot clinic on wheels—featuring an exam room and two private counseling rooms—that will bring health services, preventive screening and education to the community using a $1.95 million grant aided by Sen.   • RI Riddle Room in Warwick, voted one of the best escape rooms by USA TODAY, offers four exciting games — Vanishing at The Velmont, Forest of Fortune, Imaginasium of Intrigue and a nostalgic trip to Rocky Point Park — with private bookings, prices starting at $85 for the first two players and $29 for each additional person; reservations must be made online at least 30 minutes in advance.  The Newport Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Jamestown’s Erica Lush finished a prestigious European offshore solo race in her Beneteau 3 Hope, traveling nearly 2,000 nautical miles over three legs with a combined time of 13 days plus 4 hours, 51 minutes. She was the third American to qualify for La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec and said her achievement felt absolutely unreal.  Newport This Week
