- ➤ The Newport Historical Society had its highest-ever meeting on Thursday and said it reached more than 24,000 people with 24 programs, 207 tours and 350 research sessions — including a record 2,250 guests at the French in Newport event. - ➤ WalletHub reported that Rhode Island borrowers pay a median of $217 each month for student loans (the state ranks 12th nationally) and New England rates range from $184 in Maine to $248 in Vermont (the report compares regional costs). The Newport Daily News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A seven percent sales tax on short-term parking is now in effect for parking lots and garages used for 30 days or less—this tax does not apply to street parking meters. ABC6
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Brown upset URI 28—21 on Oct. 3 by forcing four turnovers at Centreville Bank Stadium, snapping a six-game losing streak. The Bears claimed the Governor's Cup for the first time since 2017. The Newport Daily News
- ➤ Friday night in Rhode Island sports had a playoff feel in an overtime high school football game as Hendricken edged La Salle 21 to 20—setting the tone for other matchups. The report listed North Kingstown beating Central 29 to 28, Cranston West defeating Cumberland 29 to 0, Pawtucket Co-op winning 28 to 6 against Lincoln, and Classical defeating East Greenwich 35 to 7—adding more excitement to the season.
