  • The 42nd Annual Taste of Newport will honor six local restaurateurs on Nov. 2 at the Newport Marriott Hotel & Spa—more than 350 guests are expected and ticket sales will support Child & Family programs.  What's Up Newp

  • Dave's Fresh Marketplace said its free coffee will continue after an anonymous Reddit post falsely claimed it would be replaced with water stations on January 1, 2026 + sparking worry among shoppers. Susan Budlong, the store's director of marketing, called the rumor 'disgusting' + and said no change is planned.  The Newport Daily News

  • Charter Books in Newport is hosting a cookbook event where RI author Polina Chesnakova will present her new cookbook Chesnok and demonstrate making Varenyky at Pivotal Brewing on October 29 at 6:00 p.m.—attendees will also enjoy food tastings, a Q&A session, and free giveaways including a signed copy of the book.  Newport This Week
  • On Wednesday, Oct. 15, the MLK Community Center will host a free outdoor screening of Water Brother: The Sid Abbruzzi Story on the basketball courts at 20 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Blvd, running from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with the film starting at 7 p.m.—the 90-minute documentary tells the story of a legendary surfer and is presented in partnership with Water Bros. and newportFILM while free candy, popcorn and soda will be provided.  What's Up Newp
  • A magnificent unrestored 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C-2300 'Rimoldi' Corto Spyder won Best of Show at Newport Concours d’Elegance held Sunday on the Breakers grounds — it beat 184 classic cars from the United States and Europe and took first place in its Pre-War Alfa Romeo class. Owned by Chris MacAllister, the car competed before 70 judges from four countries who evaluated 27 classes.  What's Up Newp

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A legislative commission released a study on Oct. 6 that says URI should build a new medical school to help Rhode Island make more money and get more doctors — a public meeting is set for Thursday, Oct. 9 at 5 p.m. at the Senate Lounge for comments. The report says the project may cost about $217.5 million and could balance its budget by its third year.  The Newport Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • John Marshall—the founder of Potential Energy from Rhode Island—told the Possibly podcast that simple words like pollution work better than technical terms such as carbon footprint in climate talks. He added that focusing on protecting what people love can motivate clear action on climate change.  The Public's Radio
  • Several groups, including Rhode Island AFL-CIO, filed a lawsuit Monday against the EPA saying it canceled the $7 billion Solar for All program meant to help lower-income families use solar power. The groups argue the cancellation will raise electricity bills and cost local jobs—undermining progress in clean energy.  What's Up Newp

  • Rhode Island State Representative Jason Knight announced his run for Attorney General at the Guild in Warren on Monday night. He said he will fight to keep Rhode Islanders safe from criminals—citing his public service experience—and will challenge former Attorney General’s Office senior official Keith Hoffman, who is endorsed by current Attorney General Peter Neronha.  ABC6
  • Rhode Island leaders celebrated the state’s agriculture industry on Monday at Farm Fresh Rhode Island’s 10 Sims Avenue location during RI Grown Day—numerous agricultural leaders spoke at the noon event. The celebration marked state support for local farming and its vital role in our food supply.  WJAR NBC 10

  • Between Sept. 29 and Oct. 3, Newport County saw 28 home closings as buyers and sellers rushed to finish deals before the expanded luxury transfer tax—called the Taylor Swift Tax—and a higher conveyance tax took effect on Oct. 1. Two headline sales were Judge Judy’s home for $15,300,000 and the Playhouse on Ocean Drive for $10,442,000.  What's Up Newp
