COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Aquidneck Food Pantry will hold a comedy fundraiser on Nov 1 at VFW Post 5390 to support feeding residents in need—doors open at 5 p.m. with the show starting at 6 p.m. at 822 Anthony Road, and tickets cost $25 while attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations.  What's Up Newp
  • Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard will host the annual Pumpkin Regatta on Friday, October 10 (4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.) to raise funds for Sail Newport; local yachtsmen will race or spectate while enjoying food and bidding at a silent auction. The tradition, now in its fourteenth year, will feature multiple races for fastest team and best costumes.  Newport This Week
  • Newport County has a busy schedule with IYRS hosting a Holly Jolly Weekend holiday party on Dec 5 and an artisan market on Dec 6 at Restoration Hall, free 'Life After Life' theater performances on Nov 1 and 2 with guided tours starting Oct 15, and a Mosaic Club meeting on Oct 16 awarding scholarships. The community also will see education awards on Oct 23, the annual Taste of Newport on Nov 2, and a free YouthFit program for teens running from Oct 22 to Nov 10—showing strong local support for culture and healthy living.  The Newport Daily News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Omnicare, a Rhode Island pharmacy that serves long-term care facilities, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after a $949 million court decision — CVS Health is now reviewing whether to restructure or sell the business while patients see no change in service. The company said it has enough cash and a special loan to keep operating during its reorganization.  The Newport Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of Rhode Island Guitar and Mandolin Festival will run from Oct. 19th to Oct. 26th and feature headliners Tommy Emmanuel and classical guitarist Meng Su on and around the URI campus. The festival offers a full schedule of concerts, competitions, and educational programs — drawing both local and international audiences.  The Newport Daily News
  • The John Bliss House on Wilbur Avenue in Newport has been added to the National Register of Historic Places—one of the oldest buildings built between 1680 and 1716 with a unique stone-ender style. It served as British field headquarters in the Revolutionary War and is now a private home that offers visits by appointment.  WJAR NBC 10
  • At 162 West Main Road, Sakonnet Vineyard will host a free two-day harvest festival on Oct. 11—12 to celebrate its 50th anniversary with live music, wine tastings, local vendors and family activities at the Little Compton winery. Visitors will enjoy a self-guided walking tour on Oct. 11 and a farmers market with talks on beekeeping, regenerative farming and winemaking on Oct. 12.  What's Up Newp
  • A forgotten 1913 painting by a U.S. Navy petty officer discovered at Newport Elks Lodge will be unveiled on Nov. 1—after a six-month restoration brought the century-old artwork back to life. The event will start at 1 p.m. at 141 Pelham Street with family members, including the artist’s great-granddaughter, in attendance.  What's Up Newp

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The state is considering adding more sports betting companies after a system outage on the first Sunday of the NFL season left many frustrated with Sports Book RI. The Rhode Island Lottery said eight firms have shown interest—officials say that more options may lead to increased problem gambling.  WJAR NBC 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Middletown Town Council voted unanimously Monday night to oppose a proposed moratorium on new natural gas connections, saying the measure was unfair and could raise costs for residents and businesses. Town officials argued that halting hookups would hurt community affordability—especially since converting to alternatives would be very expensive.  What's Up Newp

  • Point guard Jaen Chatman, a consensus three-star and top-200 national prospect from Blair Academy in New Jersey, pledged to join URI’s 2026 men’s basketball team on Tuesday evening—adding a promising guard to a competitive backcourt.  The Newport Daily News
