COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today and tomorrow, the 34th annual Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival takes place on Newport’s historic waterfront from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., offering free admission, fresh seafood, live music, and family-friendly options. Proceeds from festival bars will benefit Child & Family—organizers encourage the use of the Jamestown Newport Ferry or bikes to reach the event.  What's Up Newp

CULTURE NEWS

  • Newport has a busy weekend with many live music shows—festivals and public meetings spread over Friday, today, and Sunday. Friday’s events are over; today features the Harvest Festival at Newport Vineyards and public meetings, while Sunday's schedule will bring more performances for locals.  What's Up Newp
  • The Museum of Newport Irish History will host historian Dr. Timothy J. Meagher on Monday at 6 p.m. at the Wyndham Newport Hotel where he will talk about Irish American identity changes over four decades—doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the talk is available in person or via Zoom.  What's Up Newp
  • The JPT Film and Event Center will host a fall storytelling series featuring best-selling fantasy author Carissa Broadbent on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. in Newport's historic Washington Square. She will hold a book signing and discussion hosted by Charter Books and join fellow author Jenny L. Howe—tickets include a pre-signed copy of her new novel and an option to sign up to two previous titles.  What's Up Newp

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hundreds of thousands of Rhode Islanders may get between $100 and $5000 as part of a proposed settlement over the RI Bridges data hack that exposed personal info for over 735000 people in December—postcards will be mailed to potential claimants within 30 days. Claimants may also receive two years of medical data monitoring—Deloitte denies any wrongdoing.  WJAR NBC 10

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sixty top sailors will race 37-inch carbon fiber sailboats at Sail Newport today in the DragonFlite 95 National Championship through Sunday. Local competitors including brothers Ken and Brad Read will launch from Admirals Pier at Fort Adams State Park — the event is sanctioned by the American Model Yacht Association.  What's Up Newp
