- ➤ Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center is launching a film series honoring the late Robert Redford, with eight films scheduled over nearly six months. - ➤ At a joint meeting on October 9, Middletown officials said now is not the time to resume school regionalization talks with Newport due to declining enrollment and state aid cuts. Newport reopened discussions in March after a 2022 referendum failed, but Middletown's School Committee blocked further negotiations and the Town Council discussed next steps on Oct 20 — officials stress the current financial pressures as they weigh future benefits. - ➤ Ocean State, a four-part PBS docuseries on Rhode Island’s marine ecosystems, began filming Friday and focuses on local waters with special attention to Block Island’s biodiversity. - ➤ Spotted lanternflies are invasive insects from China now seen across Rhode Island that feed on tree sap and reduce crop yields. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management advises residents to squish any they see and not move them to help protect local farms as studies into biological controls continue. - ➤ The Rhode Island Department of Health said M.C.I. Foods, Inc. is recalling over 90,000 pounds of ready-to-eat breakfast burrito and wrap products due to possible Listeria contamination—products made between Sept. 17 and Oct. 14 and shipped nationwide—with no reported illnesses. Consumers are advised to discard any recalled items. ABC6

- ➤ Brad Read—executive director of Sail Newport—won the DF95 National Championship at Sail Newport after racing 14 remote-controlled sailing events from Friday to Sunday, beating his younger brother Ken by three points. - ➤ The International Tennis Hall of Fame added eight new board governors for 2026 and appointed three current members to its 24-member Executive Board to guide the nonprofit based in Newport.
