COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Newport County will host a variety of Halloween events this week including trunk or treat gatherings at shops, costume parties at historic sites and family-friendly sessions at parks and police stations. Adults can also enjoy haunted tours, live readings and themed parties from Oct. 25 to Oct. 31 (event details vary by location).  The Newport Daily News
  • Heather Abbott, a Boston Marathon bombing survivor from 2013, now runs a foundation that has raised millions to give custom prosthetic legs to amputees—like one that helped a Warwick woman swim—and she continues to empower others to regain their strength.  WJAR NBC 10

  • Middletown Self Storage will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its new facility at 101 Valley Road on Oct. 27 at noon in partnership with the Newport Chamber of Commerce—where attendees will tour the facility, enjoy light refreshments and giveaways, and new renters can get a free first month with a minimum lease period.  What's Up Newp

  • Ski and snowboard fans in Newport will watch Teton Gravity Research’s new film “Pressure Drop” at the Jane Pickens Theater on Tuesday, Oct 28, at 7:30 p.m.—celebrating the company’s 30th anniversary; doors open at 6 p.m.—tickets cost $22 for adults and $15 for kids under 16.  What's Up Newp
  • Newport County offers a busy weekend with a string quartet concert series at two churches on Oct 25 and Oct 26, a Japan-America Friendship Festival at Touro Park on Oct 25, and volunteer tree planting at Miantonomi Park on Oct 23 and Oct 24. An Emerging Forms art show at Jessica Hagen Fine Art on Oct 25 will also feature local emerging artists.  The Newport Daily News
  • The Jonas Brothers will perform at Amica Mutual Pavilion on Nov. 20 as part of their JONAS20: Greetings from Your Hometown tour + presale tickets start Thursday at 10 a.m. with general sale tickets available on Friday via Ticketmaster.  WJAR NBC 10
  • Barrington native Shanna Moakler said on Oct 17th in a radio interview that she was considered for the Real Housewives of RI but was not picked and is now in talks to buy back her parents' home. Bravo has not yet announced the show's premiere date.  The Newport Daily News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rhode Island has been in a recession since last December as University of Rhode Island economist Leonard Lardaro showed with his Current Conditions Index—eight of 12 measures were lower than last year’s levels. He said rising weak numbers and national trends mean the economy will continue to slow in the coming months.  What's Up Newp
  • In 2024, Rhode Island welcomed 29.4 million visitors who spent $6 billion and supported 88,509 jobs, according to data from Governor Dan McKee and Rhode Island Commerce—marking a record year with increases in both visitor numbers and spending from 2023.  What's Up Newp

  • Dr. Mehmet Oz said Medicare Part B costs may rise while Medicare Advantage and Part D prices are expected to drop. He urged people to check their plans+ open enrollment is open until Dec. 7.  WJAR NBC 10

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Newport’s Seaview Terrace, a Gilded Age mansion spanning 43,772 square feet on nearly eight acres, is back on the market for $28.5 million. The estate at 207 Ruggles Ave features a 6,000-square-foot gatehouse and a storied past—built in 1923, later used as a school and dorm, and even saved from a 2024 fire.  The Newport Daily News

  • Centreville Bank Stadium, home of Rhode Island FC, was voted best new or renovated venue by SportsTravel Magazine. The soccer-specific venue opened on May 3 and has hosted major events—its sustainable design and wide support set a new standard in Rhode Island sports.  The Newport Daily News
  • WPRI’s JP Smollins returns to the Blitz Breakdown—joining Eric Rueb to review Week 6 games and predict Week 7 winners as the show highlights Woonsocket’s comeback win over Pawtucket and La Salle’s dominant win over St. Raphael.
