On a chilly October morning, Roby Farin drove her red Ford truck to the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center with winter squash from her Middletown farm as volunteers gathered to prepare for a surge in food demand after SNAP benefits were halted amid a government shutdown.

The center held an emergency food drive on Nov. 2 that collected over 8,000 pounds of food to support Newport’s working poor—though it remains unclear when SNAP funds will resume.

Prout won the Division 2 girls tennis championship on Saturday at Slater Park by defeating Rogers 4 to 0—winning three singles matches and two doubles matches.
