COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local animal groups, shelters, and food pantries are collecting pet food and supplies to help residents feed their pets amid increasing SNAP challenges. Good Neighbors and other organizations are accepting donations in person + online to meet the growing need.  WJAR NBC 10
  • Boys Town New England launched its annual Buy a Bird campaign to help local families get Thanksgiving meals. Donations made from Nov. 1 to 15 will fund holiday baskets costing about $150 each that include turkey, fresh vegetables, fruit, stuffing and pie fillings—designed to meet each family’s needs.  What's Up Newp

CULTURE NEWS

  • Newport Contemporary Ballet is marking 25 years with The Newport Nutcracker at Rosecliff; performances will run from Nov. 26 through Dec. 5 at the historic mansion, featuring a new second act that brings out Newport’s charm — the show has partnered with local groups and tickets come in three tiers: Emerald at $148, Ruby at $198, and Diamond at $248.  What's Up Newp
  • Hallmark launches the holiday romance 'A Newport Christmas' that follows Ella, a socialite from 1905 who is whisked to 2025 where she meets historian Nick — and she must choose between her old world and her new love. The film stars Ginna Claire Mason and Wes Brown and is available now on the Hallmark streaming service.  WJAR NBC 10
  • The Preservation Society of Newport County will host Songs from Newport, a historical musical program featuring music from the Civil War through the Gilded Age, on Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. in the Rosecliff ballroom+ a reception starts at 5:30 p.m. and the show will be available online.  What's Up Newp

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Dan McKee said Tuesday that his administration opposed the possible closure of Roger Williams Medical Center and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital—contingency plans with the Executive Office of Health and Human Services are underway to protect patient care.  ABC6
  • The Rhode Island Energy Facility Siting Board approved a two-mile transmission line plan for SouthCoast Wind to connect its offshore project to the grid, even as unsettled federal permits and unsigned power agreements leave the project’s future uncertain—officials warned that the license will lapse if required agreements are not finalized within five years. A federal judge’s decision on Tuesday to reconsider an earlier permit further adds to the uncertainty as developers work to resolve key issues.  What's Up Newp
  • Newport County firefighters, EMTs and police officers will get mental health support to address anxiety, PTSD and depression through a $125,000 grant awarded to Strategic Prevention Partnerships in Portsmouth—this initiative is funded by the Rhode Island Foundation in partnership with Gov. Dan McKee’s Governor’s Overdose Task Force and will work with local mental health and family services.  What's Up Newp
  • Gov. Dan McKee joined local officials on Tuesday at the Florence Gray Center to launch a $7.5 million renovation that will turn the facility into a Community Learning Center—expanding the welcome area, meeting rooms, a computer lab, and conference spaces to support out-of-school learning, job training, and health services. The project is part of a larger state initiative funded by American Rescue Plan Act funds and is expected to open in October.  What's Up Newp

  • Newport Hospital’s Emergency Department has seen an increase in flu, COVID-19 and RSV cases as the respiratory season starts; health experts advise everyone aged 6 months and older to get vaccinated—especially those at high risk—to build immunity before peak months begin.  The Newport Daily News
