- ➤ Newport County has many news events this week—an art talk on Helen Hooker O'Malley’s legacy will be held at the Wyndham Newport Hotel on Nov. 19, while a pop-up food pantry has opened at Leonard Brown House to aid residents in need and Arts Around the Fire at Sardella’s Restaurant welcomes the new director of the Newport Art Museum. Other stories include the Rotary Club’s Citrus Fundraiser with orders due by Nov. 16, a new boardwalk on the Sakonnet Greenway Trail in memory of Maya L. Auchincloss, a roofing donation to advocate Pauline Perkins-Moye, a new special education program at Salve Regina University, an expungement clinic on Dec. 4, and free firearms safety training for youth on Nov. 21. - ➤ This weekend, Newport Restaurant Week wraps up with nearly 75 restaurants offering special deals while local groups plan live events including a chorus concert at Central Baptist Church and a Candlelight Concert of Remembrance at St. George’s School Chapel on Saturday. A Holiday Show reception runs at Portsmouth Arts Guild from noon to 4 p.m. and Belmont Chapel will host a free screening of 'Tipping Point' with a Q&A on Sunday at 3 p.m. — giving locals many ways to enjoy fall. - ➤ Today, World Kindness Day calls on locals to show small acts of kindness—such as holding doors open or giving a compliment—to brighten someone's day. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Newport and Middletown are renovating the Florence Gray Center into a Community Learning Center—adding classrooms, computer labs, a telemedicine room and multipurpose spaces with $7.5 million in funding from the American Rescue Plan Act; construction began in September 2024 and the center is set to open in 2026 to boost education and health services. - ➤ IYRS School of Technology & Trades will host its 20th annual Career Day on Jan. 24 from 9 a.m. to noon at Restoration Hall, 449 Thames St. The event—connecting employers in marine trades and modern manufacturing with job seekers including IYRS students, alumni and community members—will offer networking and recruitment opportunities. - ➤ The Atlantic Shark Institute tagged its 50th great white shark, marking a milestone in its study of juvenile sharks—scientists say the data will help track where the young sharks spend their time and assess their health. - ➤ The Rhode Island Airport Corporation fired one employee and put two on leave after investigating misconduct in its Airfield Maintenance Department—employees had reported hostile conditions including threatening behavior, racial slurs, and demeaning comments, and the probe is led by Senior Vice President Jessica Damicis. - ➤ Travelers at TF Green International Airport in Warwick say they face delays as the government shutdown continues and flight cuts cause late-night arrivals—one passenger said they landed at 2:30 a.m. after repeated delays.
