  • Volunteers from People’s Credit Union teamed with Newport Salvation Army to prepare over 300 Thanksgiving meal kits for local families. Heather Sweeney said the work shows the group’s year‐round commitment to helping neighbors — a valued Newport tradition.  What's Up Newp
  • Volunteers form the backbone of Newport nonprofits by helping run food pantries and senior programs—Tom and Vickie Settle serve at the community center food pantry and Richard Gottlieb aids seniors with technology at East Bay Community Action Program and Save The Bay—reinforcing local support.   • The Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce will hold Holidays by the Sea on December 1st at 10:00 a.m. at Big Weather Gear, 154 Thames Street in Newport with speakers including Erin Donovan-Boyle, President and CEO of the Chamber — Representative Gabe Amo, Robert J. Piechota, Mayor Charles Holder, and Vicky Cimino. The event will urge local residents to shop, dine, and stay in Newport while featuring a Holiday Décor Contest and a free digital advertising opportunity.  Newport This Week
  • Friends of the Waterfront will hold its annual meeting on December 4 at the Newport Marriott—membership sign ups begin at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting runs from 6 to 7 p.m. with a free presentation on proposed public access at Newport Harbor Hotel.  Newport This Week

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Newport Navy Choristers will perform 'Christmas in Song' on December 12 at 7:30 p.m. at OceanPointe Christian Church in Middletown; tickets cost $20 for adults, $15 for seniors (65+ yrs) and $10 for children 12 and under with proceeds supporting the Orion Military Scholars Program non-profit.  Newport This Week
  • Jazz dance and music fans will attend the 'Take the Risk' jazz lounge performance at Salve Regina University's Ochre Court on Dec. 3, presented by the Salve dance program with live musicians led by Marcus Grant and Trinity Leite. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the first set starts at 7:30 p.m. — seating is limited with a cash bar available.  What's Up Newp
  • Homes in Rhode Island are getting ready for the holidays by setting up light displays with thousands of lights and music cues — some shows run for up to 40 minutes. In Newport, the MacDonalds’ Christmas Display at Ellery Road is on from 4:30 to 10 p.m., and similar displays will appear in Portsmouth, Coventry, Tiverton, Warwick, Bradford, and Riverside.  The Newport Daily News
  • Molly Dickinson won Best in Show for her painting Windfall, subtitled Primal Places, at the Jamestown Arts Center Members’ Show, where Judge Michael Rose selected her work from over 150 entries — her win comes with a future solo exhibition — while Annie LaVigne and Lisa Barsumian took second and third place respectively. The exhibition is on view through Jan. 10 during regular gallery hours with free admission.  What's Up Newp

HEALTH NEWS

  • Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island has grown its service from one route in 1969 to serving 1,500 older adults daily with home-delivered meals and wellness checks — a system that saw a 77% increase in deliveries since 2020. The organization recently marked its 21 millionth meal and now partners with health providers through its Food is Medicine program to support better care statewide.  What's Up Newp
