COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lucy’s Hearth will host its 15th annual Designer Wreath and Gourmet Bake Sale on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to noon on the ground floor of the Easton’s Beach rotunda—volunteers are crafting many wreaths as the event aims to raise about $20,000 for the only shelter for families on Aquidneck Island at 19 Valley Road in Middletown.  Newport This Week
  • Local leaders and housing advocates met at CCRI Newport on Nov. 19 to address the growing homelessness crisis in Newport County where more than 2,000 people live in cars, tents, or on the streets. They proposed solutions such as prefab pallet shelters and accessory dwelling units enabled by a new law — measures that will ease the housing crisis and help aging homeowners manage rising taxes.  Newport This Week
  • City officials announced that the Newport Illuminated Boat Parade will be held on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 6 p.m. due to forecast high winds (gusts up to 40 mph) that may affect Friday’s event; spectators will view the display along Newport’s waterfront and are asked to bring a non-perishable food donation for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center with a donation box at the Newport Yacht Club.  The Newport Daily News

  • Aquidneck Harvest Company — led by Newport native Timothy Ryan — announced an exclusive partnership with Sea Witch Medicinals, founded by island native Jessica Gorman, to manufacture and distribute cannabis wellness products at licensed dispensaries. The deal combines local production with Sea Witch’s apothecary methods to bring innovative products to Rhode Islanders.  Newport This Week

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sparkling Lights at The Breakers dazzles visitors for the sixth year with a half-mile illuminated path—holiday music fills the air as they stroll through the 13-acre estate. Colorful displays include a new water fountain feature and the return of a 50-foot-long train outlined in lights, and entry requires a special ticket with a set time.  Newport This Week

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rhode Island Energy proposed a plan to raise distribution rates—electric bills will increase nearly 5% and gas bills about 21%—to cover needed infrastructure upgrades and higher operating costs, with the filing reviewed by the state Public Utilities Commission and changes set to take effect in September. The proposal also introduces a tiered discount system for low-income customers to cap utility spending amid rising costs.  The Newport Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Social Security benefits in December will be issued via direct deposit or a Direct Express card—SSI checks will arrive on Dec 1 and regular benefits on Dec 3, Dec 10, Dec 17, and Dec 24. More than 200,000 Rhode Islanders rely on these payments—benefits resumed after the government shutdown from October to mid-November.  The Newport Daily News
