  • Omen will provide a full holiday meal with ham and sides for a family of four on Sunday, Dec. 14 at Newport Skatepark with pickup at John H. Chaffe Blvd; sign-up is by email until slots are filled.  Newport This Week
  • Newport Skatepark will host a Holiday Toy and Food Drive & Bowl Bash on Sunday, Dec. 14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at John H Chafee Blvd, featuring an open skate experience for all ages with bands starting at 1 p.m.  Newport This Week
  • Lucy’s Hearth sold over 250 handcrafted wreaths Saturday morning at the Easton’s Beach Rotunda to raise $20,000 for families experiencing homelessness; the funds will support the group’s shelter and housing programs on Aquidneck Island during the tough holiday season.  What's Up Newp

  • Discover Newport named six new board members on Monday, a week after appointing local business owner Matthew Gray as chair. CULTURE NEWS

  • Raul Malo, the Grammy-winning frontman of The Mavericks who delivered a sold-out show at Jane Pickens Theater in 2024, died on Dec. 8 after battling Stage 4 colon cancer. Newport audiences remember his lively performance, and his music remains a treasured part of local culture.  What's Up Newp

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Newport and Middletown councils met on Dec. 8 at the Wyndham Hotel to plan regionalization of their school districts and set a timetable for a Nov. 3 ballot question (despite previous failures). They will reconvene on Jan. 12 with local school and state education officials.  Newport This Week

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Elizabeth Shields launched Urgent MD in Newport to provide at-home urgent care for all ages, especially busy families and seniors. The service operates during urgent care hours (including afternoons, evenings, Fridays, and Saturdays) and charges a private-pay fee for home or virtual visits.  What's Up Newp
