  • Potter League for Animals invites Rhode Islanders to foster a shelter dog from Dec. 22 to Dec. 27 during its Host a Howliday Houseguest program at its Animal Care and Adoption Center in Middletown where supplies are provided. Fosters must be 18 and live within 40 miles (experience not required).  What's Up Newp

CULTURE NEWS

  • Newport's Christmas In Newport Doorway Competition crowned winners this week when 47 Poplar Street won the Grand Prize for its standout holiday display. Residential, Commercial and Restaurant category winners were honored during judging that began on Friday, Dec. 12.  What's Up Newp
  • Admiral Charles-Louis de Ternay, who led the French Navy during the American Revolution, died on Dec. 15, 1780 (at Hunter House) from malignant fever. His large funeral procession passed Washington Street and ended at Trinity Church Graveyard, marking a memorable moment in Newport history.  What's Up Newp

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rhode Island colleges adjusted exam plans following community concerns after the Brown incident — URI canceled in-person exams yesterday and will hold online exams, CCRI held classes remotely, and RWU continued finals with added patrols at its Bristol campus. Newport’s Salve Regina increased patrols to reassure residents.  The Newport Daily News
