About this event

Join the Newport Public Library in welcoming Salve Regina University Associate Professor Heather M. Rockwell on Tuesday November 10th at 6pm.

About the talk:

The Edgewater Estate, located on Ochre Point Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island, was a large summer home built by the Kernochan Family is 1869. Despite being a grand estate occupied by northeastern elite, the home was demolished after less than 20 years, and was then largely forgotten by the community. Utilizing Ground Penetrating Radar and other geophysical survey techniques, students and faculty from Salve Regina University were able to rediscover part of this property and better understand its demolition. This lecture will discuss how geophysical methods are applied in archaeology and discuss the Edgewater discovery and other recently identified underground historic features highlighting their importance to a more holistic local history.
