- ➤ Coastal Cruisers launched a new hop-on-hop-off shuttle service in Newport using electric six-seater vehicles that riders flag down and pay with cash, Venmo, or Square — the service covers key spots like downtown, Easton’s Beach, and Castle Hill. The company will collect data and work with the city to possibly extend service to the Park and Ride Lot near the Pell Bridge Ramp exit to ease traffic congestion. The Newport Daily News
- ➤ The MLK Community Center started the Shower to Empower program to give Newport residents a way to use shower facilities after a pilot session on June 10. - ➤ The U.S. House passed a measure to cut funds for local public media that could cost Public’s Radio & Rhode Island PBS about $1 million a year, putting local news and education programs at risk. The Senate will vote on the package before July 18—if approved, the cuts will reduce support for these community services. The Public's Radio
- ➤ Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee said on Wednesday that voters should talk to their General Assembly members over a state budget that adds a 2 cent per gallon gas tax, new DMV fees for hybrid and electric cars, a $48 surcharge on health insurance plans, a higher tax on home sales, an extended hotel tax for short term rentals and a tax on expensive second homes—lawmakers will put the plan into law next week despite his refusal to sign it. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Clinic and Regatta ended in Newport after three days of sailing and a two-day coaching clinic for 30 sailors with disabilities in the 2.4mR and Martin 16 classes. Local sailor Chuck Allen won the top trophy in the 2.4mR class and Tracy Schmitt plus Dan Scher claimed gold in the Martin 16 fleet while Team Clagett prepares for the World Championships in Italy this October.
