Good morning, Newport. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 17th of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 900 swimmers and volunteers will gather at Scarborough North State Beach in Narragansett on Sept. 6 for the 16th annual Swim Across America event + organizers will offer quarter, half and 1-mile swim options with registration opening at 8 a.m., a welcome ceremony at 9:30 a.m. and water entry beginning at 10:15 a.m. The event was moved from Roger Wheeler State Beach because of boardwalk construction + it aims to raise funds for cancer research, joining an effort that has raised nearly $3 million since 2010.  What's Up Newp

CULTURE NEWS

  • Two solo exhibitions will open on Sept. 12 at Jamestown Arts Center, featuring Pittsburgh-based artist DS Kinsel’s 'Bohemian Ossuary' and Providence-based artist Becci Davis’ 'Bloodstone + Home' that examine ancestry and memory until Nov. 8. An opening reception and talk will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the opening day.  What's Up Newp

HEALTH NEWS

  • Representatives from elder justice organizations met at the Middletown Senior Center earlier this week to teach neighbors how to spot and report elder abuse in Rhode Island — they stressed that mandatory reporting laws mean anyone who suspects abuse must inform the proper authorities. The group urged all caregivers and community members to keep a close watch on older adults so help can come quickly when needed.  What's Up Newp
