- ➤ A Rhode Island special assistant attorney general Devon Hogan allegedly told Newport Police to turn off their body cameras & refused to leave the Clarke Cooke House on Bannister’s Wharf on Aug. 14, prompting her arrest on a charge of willful trespass and the arrest of another person for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and willful trespass. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Newport Art Museum announced Thursday that its summer events raised a record $648,500 to support exhibitions and programming, with over 1,400 people attending across three days. The museum hosted its Summer Art Party on July 11 at the John N.A. Griswold House and held Wet Paint on Aug. 9 — the events raised $428,500 for ongoing projects and an extra $220,000 will support four current exhibitions including one honoring Minnie Cushing Coleman. - ➤ On Sunday, Newport held its 78th annual reading of George Washington’s letter to the Hebrew Congregation at Touro Synagogue at the Old Colony House—an event celebrating enduring religious freedom. - ➤ A Newport resident and University of Rhode Island professor received a five-year, $848,602 NSF CAREER Award to study Antarctic leopard seals and explore why females are larger than males. Her project will combine fieldwork in Chile with lab research — helping scientists learn more about the seals' biology as Antarctica faces environmental changes. What's Up Newp
- ➤ In July, more than two dozen students from Newport and neighboring states attended a Summer Cyber Camp at the Community College where they learned to use portable two-way radios and cyber security skills for emergency communication—led by retired Air Force officer Michael Cullen of the Newport County Radio Club. - ➤ Providence officials warned that Hurricane Erin's indirect impact has raised the risk of dangerous rip currents for swimmers and boaters along local beaches.
